5 Reasons to Attend Cheese-A-Palooza This Weekend

Aug 29, 2016 – Kristin Lindstrom

If you grew up in the Kenosha area, or anywhere in Wisconsin for that matter, I’m going to assume you love cheese. And if you moved into the Kenosha area, you better start figuring out how to love it right away! In case you didn’t know, Wisconsin is basically the cheese capital of the world. What better place to enjoy that cheese than the beautiful lakefront in Kenosha? This weekend, September 2 – 3, the 4th  AnnualCheese-A-Palooza event will be in full swing downtown. You won’t want to miss this one, it’s going to “brie” a “gouda” weekend! (That’s a cheesy pun if I ever heard one…) So here are the Top Five Reasons to Attend Cheese-A-Palooza!

1. Cheese! There will be plenty of cheese-themed foods for you to sample and enjoy. From cheese curds and cheese fries to cheesecake and even some new creations, there will be no shortage of cheese! One thing though that you still won’t find at the festival, though, is chunks of fresh cheese for purchase – even though this event happens to be at the end of the summer, it is generally still pretty warm and most attendees don’t want to walk around for the afternoon with a big chunk of cheese inside their bags or held in their hands.

2. Eating Contests! If you love competition and also really like eating cheese, the eating contests may be for you. The foods for the contests will be mac n’ cheese, cheesecake, grilled cheese, cheese pizza and cheese dogs. Registration for the contests is free and can be done onsite or online before the festival. There will be prizes awarded for the participant who can eat their favorite cheesy food the fastest. Prefer to savor your bites? No problem, just come enjoy the spectacle and cheer on the participants!

If it’s the music you’re interested in, you’ll be delighted to know that there will be three stages at the festival, two of which will have live music and one that will be a family stage hosting karaoke and the eating contests. Kenosha County Dairy Promotions Team will be bringing Bella the Cow for children to get a chance to experience what it’s like to milk a cow. Bella is a life-sized, fiberglass cow with working udders. If milking a cow isn’t your thing, maybe you’d enjoy the cooking shows by Fundamental Kitchen. Or you can just fill up on all of the tasty cheese creations. The Shalom Center will be selling cheese scarves, the Happenings Magazine booth will have cheese hats, and all the booths in between will have food, information and fun, so be sure to browse.

4. Food (and drinks)! As if there aren’t enough reasons so far to attend this fest, there are also manyfood vendors. If for some odd reason, you’re one of those people who doesn’t absolutely LOVE cheese like the rest of us, there will be food available that doesn’t happen to be smothered or stuffed with cheese, so you can still tag along with your cheese-lovin’ pals. Wisconsin favorites like brats (which go great with cheese), as well as festival staples such as Funnel Cakes, Sno-Cones, several food trucks, and more will also be available. For the 21-and-over crowd, there will be two beer gardens where beer and wine will be available for purchase. Enjoy a drink and a day by the lake with free music and no shortage of fun.

Saturday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. is Kenosha HarborMarket and from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. is theDowntown Kenosha Classic Cruise-In Car Show. On Sunday there is a “5K Queso Walk/Run for Women’s Health” (in keeping with the cheese-theme of the weekend) that starts at 9 a.m. being put on by local independent health groups. The Tall Ship “Red Witch” also will be in the harbor and taking trips out on Lake Michigan. (Pro Tip: Check out the August 25 edition of the Happenings Magazine to get a coupon for a ride on the tall ship!) And don’t forget about the 14th Annual Car Show to benefit Wounded Veterans, presented by the Southern Wisconsin All Airborne Chapter of the 82nd Airborne Division Association Inc., at Simmons Island is also on Sunday – free admission for spectators!

Here’s one last Pro Tip for you … park in a remote lot downtown and hop on the streetcar to be dropped off at the festival grounds to avoid traffic! Labor Day weekend is going to be so jam-packed, you definitely don’t need to go anywhere besides Downtown Kenosha for your weekend fun! You can always find things to do on the Kenosha Area CVB’s calendar of events, too! There is still time to plan a weekend getaway, or even just a day trip. For us locals, we can call it a stay-cation weekend!
